Now that the Supreme Court has denied certiorari to the New Jersey Donofrio case, it appears the CFR-controlled Corporate Big Media are using more of their resources to add to the perception that this vital constitutional issue really has no significant credibility. After greatly under-reporting the story, now the Establishment Media can today report a defeat on this particular legal challenge to Obama’s constitutional eligibility to be elected president. There are other legal challenges, notably the Pennsylvania Berg case, and the California Keyes case, still in the legal pipeline. Pay attention to how much coverage the Establishment Media gives to these other ongoing cases, not only today, but also in the days ahead. Or, if the CFR-controlled media manipulators of public thought and attention will under-report once again.

An anti-tax activist from upstate New York who is questioning whether President-elect Barack Obama is a “natural born citizen” eligible for the nation’s top job said Tuesday that his non-profit group spent “tens of thousands of dollars” to get his message across in ads in the Chicago Tribune this week.

Robert L. Schulz, 69, chairman of We The People Foundation, took out ads Monday and Wednesday to raise questions about whether Obama’s Hawaii certificate of live birth is authentic.

The ads echo accusations circulated online by some Obama opponents before the election. Cases challenging Obama’s citizenship have been tossed out of courts in several states, and Hawaiian officials have vouched for the authenticity of Obama’s birth certificate, which is locked in a state vault. The Obama campaign likewise has always dismissed the accusations.

Questions about Obama’s citizenship status are spreading like wildfire on the Internet, and some media outlets are beginning to run stories on the issue.

Even the Russian online newspaper Pravda featured a column about “the man with no visible past.”

The column said Obama can easily put the issue to rest by producing the document, rather than spending thousands of dollars on attorneys to defy federal and state lawsuits.

However, amid skeptical reports, the New American reported, “This story has gained credence, separating it from Internet rumors, because Obama has reputedly hired three law firms (firms, not lawyers) to make sure that no one gets access to his birth records in Hawaii or his college transcripts from Occidental College and Harvard.”

So far, major television networks and many other mainstream newspapers are continuing to be silent on the matter.

An associate lawyer in a Chicago-based firm whose partner served on a finance committee for then-Sen. Barack Obama has advocated for the elimination of the U.S. Constitution’s requirement that a president be a “natural-born” citizen, calling the requirement “stupid” and affirming it discriminates, is outdated and undemocratic.

The paper was written in 2006, just two years after Obama had won a landslide election in Illinois to the U.S. Senate, by Sarah Herlihy. She is listed as an associate at the Chicago firm of Kirkland & Ellis, and a partner in the same firm, Bruce I. Ettelson, cites his membership on the finance committees for both U.S. Sens. Obama and Richard Durbin on the corporate website.

The issue is the subject of nearly two dozen court cases in recent weeks in the United States, including at least two that have gone to the U.S. Supreme Court, because of unanswered questions over Obama’s birthplace.

There have been accusations that he was born in Kenya, not Hawaii as his campaign has stated. His paternal grandmother has stated she was in attendance at his birth in Mombasa. While Hawaii officials say they have seen his birth certificate, they have declined to release information from it.

A New York man spent “tens of thousands of dollars” in Chicago newspaper advertising this week to convince people that President-elect Barack Obama is not a natural-born citizen of the United States.

Ads placed by the We The People Foundation repeated allegations heard throughout the campaign challenging Obama’s citizenship.

The Chicago Tribune, which ran the ads, reported Wednesday that the Obama campaign provided the paper with a copy of the president-elect’s birth certificate, but still, the paper said, “some critics remain dubious.”

After President-elect Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee let a Dec. 1 deadline slip by without responding to Pennsylvania attorney Philip J. Berg’s petition for writ of certiorari demanding Obama produce a legitimate birth certificate, the attorney is now filing a motion to stop Obama from taking office in January.

“It is my firm belief, my one thousand percent firm belief,” Berg told Schreiber, “that he does not meet the natural born qualifications, that he should not be voted for by the electors, and that he should not be sworn in this January unless he shows his credentials … which he of course cannot, simply because he does not have them.”

American donors have contributed tens of thousands of dollars to the We the People Foundation to sponsor the advertisement. It appeared in the main news section of the newspaper yesterday and is scheduled to run again tomorrow morning.

There is ongoing traffic on the internet, and multiple ongoing lawsuits originating in various court jurisdictions, concerning the unresolved legal issue of Barack Obama’s qualification under the United States Constitution to be president vis-a-vis the constitutional requirement that an American president must be “a natural born Citizen” [ Article II., Section 1., Para. 5 ] of the United States.

Not surprisingly, this important constitutional issue affecting the preservation of the Rule of Law in the United States according to the U.S. Constitution has been severely under-reported by the CFR-controlled Corporate Big Media. Of great concern to this author and others is the possibility of significant social reaction if the November 4, 2008 US presidential election results were to be voided because the American people had been defrauded by an illegal Obama candidacy. Whatever social strife may tragically occur in our nation in the case of that possible eventuality, Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. himself would bear the first and originating responsibility for any loss of life, liberty [martial law ?], or property which ensued. And the potential for martial law in the wake of severe social unrest may be just the “Ordo Ab Chao” consequence desired by the CFR / TC / Bilderberg / Skull and Bones NWO Globalist Illuminati Elites – the suspension of the American Constitution / Bill of Rights.

If the outcome of the legal process investigating Obama’s legal eligibility to be elected US President results in the voiding of his candidacy, hopefully there will also be a constitutional legal road map presented to the American public that makes clear the constitutional process for a way forward to determine the next American president. This process may depend upon whether such a decision was made: 1) before or after
December 15, 2008 when the Electors from the 50 states meet to officially elect the president; or, 2) if that date passes without a court decision, then whether a court decision is made before our after Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009. Hopefully the integrity of the constitutional process will be maintained, whatever the outcome. This is essential for the legitimacy of the process, and for the confidence of the American people.

A case that challenges President-elect Barack Obama’s name on the 2008 election ballot citing questions over his citizenship has been scheduled for a “conference” at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Conferences are private meetings of the justices at which they review cases and decide which ones to accept for formal review. This case is set for a conference Dec. 5, just 10 days before the Electoral College is scheduled to meet to make formal the election of Obama as the nation’s next president.

The Supreme Court’s website listed the date for the case brought by Leo C. Donofrio against Nina Wells, the secretary of state in New Jersey, over not only Obama’s name on the 2008 election ballot but those of two others, Sen. John McCain and Roger Calero.

The case, unsuccessful at the state level, had been submitted to Justice David Souter, who rejected it. The case then was resubmitted to Justice Clarence Thomas. The next line on the court’s docket says: “DISTRIBUTED for Conference of December 5, 2008.”

If four of the nine justices vote to hear the case in full, oral argument may be scheduled.

The action questions whether any of the three candidates is qualified under the U.S. Constitution’s requirement that a president be a “natural-born citizen.”

“If they do their duty, they would make sure that if they cast a vote for Mr. Obama, that Mr. Obama is a natural-born citizen,” Herb Titus, the Constitution Party’s running mate to Howard Phillips in 1996, told WND today.

“I think it should be resolved. The duty is in the Electoral College. Every Obama elector that is committed to casting a vote on the 15th of December, they have a constitutional duty to make certain whether Mr. Obama is a natural-born citizen,” he said.

If the electors fail their duty and Obama proves ultimately to fail the eligibility requirement of the U.S. Constitution, there would be only the laborious, contentious and cumbersome process of impeachment available to those who would wish to follow the Constitution, he suggested.

The issue of Obama’s citizenship has been in the news for weeks as multiple legal claims have asserted the Democrat is not a natural-born U.S. citizen. There have been claims he was born in Kenya, that he’s a British subject because of his father and that he lost his citizenship in Indonesia.

Two of the cases are pending before the U.S. Supreme Court and several others that have fallen by the wayside.

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Although the legitimacy of Sen. Barack Obama’s birth certificate has become a focus of intense speculation – and even several lawsuits – WND has learned that Hawaii’s Gov. Linda Lingle has placed the candidate’s birth certificate under seal and instructed the state’s Department of Health to make sure no one in the press obtains access to the original document under any circumstances.

In a startling development, Obama’s Kenyan grandmother has reportedly alleged she witnessed Obama’s birth at the Coast Provincial Hospital in Mombasa, Kenya.

In Kenya, WND was told by government authorities that all documents concerning Obama were under seal until after the U.S. presidential election on November 4.

The Obama campaign website entitled “Fight the Smears” posts a state of Hawaii “Certificate of Live Birth” which is obviously not the original birth certificate generated by the hospital where Obama reportedly was born.

“Fight the Smears” declares, “The truth is, Barack Obama was born in the state of Hawaii in 1961, a native citizen of the United States of America.”

Although the Obama campaign could immediately put an end to all the challenges by simply producing the candidate’s original birth certificate, it has not done so. And the “Fight the Smears” website offers no explanation as to why Obama has refused to request, and make public, an original hospital-generated birth certificate which the Hawaii Department of Health may possess.

AMERICA’S FIRST THANKSGIVING (1621): Christians praise God for His Provision, celebrate His Bounty with Indian neighbors

The Pilgrims were Separatist Puritan Christians who removed themselves from the religious persecution of Romish-Episcopacy in England, went first to Holland for 11-12 years (1608 – 1620), and then ventured the dangerous journey to the New World, landing on Cape Cod (Mass.) on November 11 (21), 1620. “Of the 102 Mayflower passengers who reached Cape Cod,” ** less than half were Pilgrim Separatists. During that first winter (1620-1621), half of the colonists died, “especially in January and February, being the depth of winter; and wanting houses and other comforts; being infected with the scurvy and other diseases which this long voyage and their inaccommodate condition had brought upon them.” *** The first Thanksgiving was in Fall 1621 after harvest, a celebration and praise to God for His Provision and Bounty.

Thank You God, for these Christian Separatists.

The 1621 Thanksgiving

The tradition of the Pilgrims’ first Thanksgiving is steeped in myth and legend. Few people realize that the Pilgrims did not celebrate Thanksgiving the next year, or any year thereafter, though some of their descendants later made a “Forefather’s Day” that usually occurred on December 21 or 22. Several Presidents, including George Washington, made one-time Thanksgiving holidays. In 1827, Mrs. Sarah Josepha Hale began lobbying several Presidents for the instatement of Thanksgiving as a national holiday, but her lobbying was unsuccessful until 1863 when Abraham Lincoln finally made it a national holiday.

Today, our Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November. This was set by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939 (approved by Congress in 1941), who changed it from Abraham Lincoln’s designation as the last Thursday in November (which could occasionally end up being the fifth Thursday and hence too close to Christmas for businesses). But the Pilgrims’ first Thanksgiving began at some unknown date between September 21 and November 9, most likely in very early October. The date of Thanksgiving was probably set by Lincoln to somewhat correlate with the anchoring of the Mayflower at Cape Cod, which occurred on November 21, 1620 (by our modern Gregorian calendar–it was November 11 to the Pilgrims who used the Julian calendar).

There are only two contemporary accounts of the 1621 Thanksgiving: First is Edward Winslow’s account, which he wrote in a letter dated December 12, 1621.
The complete letter was first published in 1622.

“Our corn [i.e. wheat] did prove well, and God be praised, we had a good increase of Indian corn, and our barley indifferent good, but our peas not worth the gathering, for we feared they were too late sown. They came up very well, and blossomed, but the sun parched them in the blossom. Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together after we had gathered the fruit of our labors. They four in one day killed as much fowl as, with a little help beside, served the company almost a week. At which time, amongst other recreations, we exercised our arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and among the rest their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought to the plantation and bestowed on our governor, and upon the captain and others. And although it be not always so plentiful as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty.”

The second description was written about twenty years after the fact by William Bradford in his History Of Plymouth Plantation. Bradford’s History was rediscovered in 1854 after having been taken by British looters during the Revolutionary War. Its discovery prompted a greater American interest in the history of the Pilgrims. It is also in this account that the Thanksgiving turkey tradition is founded.

They began now to gather in the small harvest they had, and to fit up their houses and dwellings against winter, being all well recovered in health and strength and had all things in good plenty. For as some were thus employed in affairs abroad, others were exercising in fishing, about cod and bass and other fish, of which they took good store, of which every family had their portion. All the summer there was no want; and now began to come in store of fowl, as winter approached, of which this place did abound when they came first (but afterward decreased by degrees). And besides waterfowl there was great store of wild turkeys, of which they took many, besides venison, etc. Besides they had about a peck of meal a week to a person, or now since harvest, Indian corn to that proportion. Which made many afterwards write so largely of their plenty here to their friends in England, which were not feigned but true reports.

Plentiful Harvest Celebrated. King Massasoyt attends.

Plimouth, Fall, 1621: Though the concept is historically nothing new–it’s been practiced through the ages–the Pilgrims celebrated a harvest feast, a celebration we now call “Thanksgiving.” To the Pilgrims, however, a day of thanksgiving meant one of prayer and fasting.

Three days of feasting and celebration topped off a bountiful harvest as Plimoth prepared for the Winter ahead. King Massasoyt, together with some ninety of his men, were entertained by the settlers. The King, in return, contributed several slain deer to the event which he presented to the governor. Wild fowl, venison, ducks, geese and turkeys were among the fare.

The First American Thanksgiving

In the spring of 1621, the colonists planted their first crops in Patuxet’s abandoned fields. While they had limited success with wheat and barley, their corn crop proved very successful, thanks to Squantum who taught them how to plant corn in hills, using fish as a fertilizer as he had seen in Newfoundland.1

Through the treaty with Massasoit which Squantum facilitated, the Pilgrims enjoyed peace and an exchange of knowledge with their neighbours, the Pokanoket. They felt hope for the future and wish that those back home were “partakers of our plenty.”

In October of 1621, the Pilgrims celebrated their first harvest with feasting and games, as was the custom in England. The celebration served to boost the morale of the 50 remaining colonists and also to impress their allies. Among the Native People attending were Massasoit and 90 Wampanoag men.

Mr. Fox 6 recordeth how that besides those worthy martyrs and confessors which were burned in Queen Mary’s days and otherwise tormented, “Many (both students and others) fled out of the land to the number of 800, and became several congregations, at Wesel, Frankfort, Basel, Emden, Markpurge, Strasburg and Geneva, etc.” Amongst whom (but especially those at Frankfort) began that bitter war of contention and persecution about the ceremonies and service book, and other popish*** and antichristian stuff, the plague of England to this day, which are like the high places in Israel which the prophets cried out against, and were their ruin. Which the better part sought, according to the purity of the gospel, to root out and utterly to abandon. And the other part (under veiled presences) for their own ends and advancements sought as stiffly to continue, maintain and defend.

The one side laboured to have the right worship of God and discipline of Christ established in the-church, according to the simplicity of the gospel, without the mixture of men’s inventions; and to have and to be ruled by the laws of God’s Word, dispensed in those offices, and by those officers of Pastors, Teachers and Elders, etc. according to the Scriptures. The other party, though under many colours and presences, endeavoured to have the episcopal dignity (after the popish manner) with their large power and jurisdiction still retained; with all those courts, canons and ceremonies, together with all such livings, revenues and subordinate officers, with other such means as formerly upheld their antichristian greatness and enabled them with lordly and tyrannous power to persecute the poor servants of God. This contention was so great, as neither the honour of God, the common persecution, nor the mediation of Mr. Calvin and other worthies of the Lord in those places, could prevail with those thus episcopally minded; but they proceeded by all means to disturb the peace of this poor persecuted church, even so far as to charge (very unjustly and ungodlily yet prelatelike) some of their chief opposers with rebellion and high treason against thc Emperor, and other such crimes.

And this contention died not with Queen Mary, nor was left beyond the seas. But at her death these people returning into England under gracious Queen Elizabeth, many of them being preferred to bishoprics and other promotions according to their aims and desires, that inveterate hatred against the holy discipline of Christ in His church 8 hath continued to this day.

And many the like to stop the mouths of the more godly,… began to persecute all the zealous professors in the land (though they knew little what this discipline meant) both by word arid deed, if they would not submit to their ceremonies and become slaves to them and their popish trash, which have no ground in the Word of God, but are relics of that man of sin…. they opprobriously and most injuriously gave unto and imposed upon them that name of Puritans,… sin hath been countenanced; ignorance, profaneness and atheism increased, and the papists encouraged to hope again for a day. 10

How not only these base and beggarly ceremonies were unlawful, but also that the lordly and tyrannous power of the prelates ought not to be submitted unto; which thus, contrary to the freedom of the gospel, would load and burden men’s consciences and by their compulsive power make a profane mixture of persons and things in the worship of God. And that their offices and callings, courts and canons, etc. were unlawful
and antichristian: being such as have no warrant in the Word of God, but the same that were used in popery and still retained. Of which a famous author thus writeth in his Dutch commentaries, 13 at the coming of King James into England:

The new king (saith he) found there established the reformed religion according to the reformed religion of King Edward VI, retaining or keeping still the spiritual state of the bishops, etc. after the old manner, much varying and differing from the reformed churches in Scotland, France and the Netherlands, Ernden, Geneva, etc., whose reformation is cut, or shapen much nearer the first Christian churches, as it was used in the Apostles’ time.

So many, therefore, of these professors as saw the evil of these things in these parts, and whose hearts the Lord had touched with heavenly zeal for His truth, they shook off this yoke of antichristian bondage, and as the Lord’s free people joined themselves (by a covenant of the Lord) into a church estate, in the fellowship of the gospel, to walk in all His ways made known, or to be made known unto them, according to their best endeavours, whatsoever it should cost them, the Lord assisting them. 14 And that it cost them something this ensuing history will declare.

But after these things they could not bug continue in any peaceable condition, but were hunted and persecuted on every side, so as their former afflictions were but as fleabitings in comparison of these which now came upon them. For some were taken and clapped up in prison, others had their houses beset and watched night and day, and hardly escaped their hands; and the most were fain to flee and leave their houses and habitations, and the means of their livelihood.

Yet these and many other sharper things which afterward befell them, were no other than they looked for, and therefore were the better prepared to bear them by the assistance of God’s grace and Spirit.

Yet seeing themselves thus molested, and that there was no hope of their continuance there, by a joint consent they resolved to go into the Low Countries, where they heard was freedom of religion for all men; as also how sundry from London and other parts of the land had been exiled and persecuted for the same cause, and were gone thither, and lived at Amsterdam and in other places of the land. So after they had continued together about a year, and kept their meetings every Sabbath in one place or other, exercising the worship of God amongst themselves, notwithstanding all the diligence and malice of their adversaries, they seeing they could no longer continue in that condition, they resolved to get over into Holland as they could. Being thus constrained to leave their native soil and country, their lands and livings, and all their friends and familiar acquaintance, it was much; and thought marvellous by many. But to go into a country they knew not but by hearsay, where they must learn a new language and get their livings they knew not how, it being a dear place and subject to the miseries of war, it was by many thought an adventure almost desperate; a case intolerable and a misery worse than death. Especially seeing they were not acquainted with trades nor traffic (by which that country cloth subsist) but had only been used to a plain country life and the innocent trade of husbandry. But these things did not dismay them, though they did sometimes trouble them; for their desires were set on the ways of God and to enjoy His ordinances; but they rested on His providence, and knew Whom they had believed.

Chapter IV
SHOWING THE REASONS AND CAUSES OF THEIR REMOVAL (from Holland, 11 or 12 years later)

After they had lived in this city about some eleven or twelve years… and sundry of them were taken away by death and many others began to be well stricken in years (the grave mistress of Experience having taught them many things), those prudent governors with sundry of the sagest members began both deeply to
apprehend their present dangers and wisely to foresee the future and think of timely remedy. In the agitation of their thoughts, and much discourse of things hereabout, at length they began to incline to this conclusion of removal to some other place. Not out of any newfangledness or other such like giddy humor by which men are oftentimes transported to their great hurt and danger, but for sundry weighty and solid reasons, some of the chief of which I will here briefly touch.

And first, they saw and found by experience the hardness of the place and country to be such as few in comparison would come to them, and fewer that would bide it out and continue with them… Yea, some preferred and chose the prisons in England rather than this liberty in Holland with these afflictions.

Secondly. They saw that though the people generally bore all these difficulties very cheerfully and with a resolute courage, being in the best and strength of their years; yet old age began to steal on many of them; and their great and continual labours, with other crosses and sorrows, hastened it before the time.

Thirdly. As necessity was a taskmaster over them so they were forced to be such, not only to their servants but in a sort to their dearest children, the which as it did not a little wound the tender hearts of many a loving father and mother, so it produced likewise sundry sad and sorrowful effects. But that which was more lamentable, and of all sorrows most heavy to be borne, was that many of their children, by these occasions and the great licentiousness of youth in that country,5 and the manifold temptations of the place, were drawn away by evil examples into extravagant and dangerous courses, getting the reins off their necks and departing from their parents. … So that they saw their posterity would be in danger to degenerate and be corrupted. 6

Lastly (and which was not least), a great hope and inward zeal they had of laying some good foundation, or at least to make some way “hereunto, for the propagating and advancing the gospel of the kingdom of Christ in those remote parts of the world; yea, though they should be but even as stepping-stones unto others for the performing of so great a work.

These and some other like reasons moved them to undertake this resolution of their removal; the which they afterward prosecuted with so great difficulties, as by the sequel will appear.

The place they had thoughts on was some of those vast and unpeopled countries of America, which are fruitful and fit for habitation, being devoid of all civil inhabitants, where there are only savage and brutish men which range up and down, little otherwise than the wild beasts of the same.

5 The Dutch, curiously enough, did not “remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy” in the strict sense that other Calvinists did. Sunday after church was a day of feasting and merrymaking, especially for children. This was one of the conditions that the English community found most obnoxious.

Chapter IX

Being thus arrived in a good harbor, and brought safe to land, they fell upon their knees and blessed the God of Heaven 10 who had brought them over the vast and furious ocean, and delivered them from all the perils and miseries thereof, again to set their feet on the firm and stable earth, their proper element.

What could now sustain them but the Spirit of God and His grace? May not and ought not the children of these fathers rightly say: “Our fathers were Englishmen which came over this great ocean, and were ready to perish in this wilderness; but they cried unto the Lord, and He heard their voice and looked on their adversity,” 13 etc.
“Let them therefore praise the Lord, because He is good: and His mercies endure forever.” “Yea, let them which have been redeemed of the Lord, shew how He hath delivered them from the hand of the oppressor. When they wandered in the desert wilderness out of the way, and found no city to dwell in, both hungry and thirsty, their soul was overwhelmed in them. Let them confess before the Lord His loving kindness and His wonderful works before the sons of men.” 14

Thanksgiving, more than any other American holiday, points us directly to Christ and His providential hand in our national history. It points to the fact that this was a nation founded by Christians.
It points to the fact that our governmental system was built upon biblical principles. It points to the fact that the inalienable rights of men such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness were given by God and not by governments. It points to the fact that individual liberty to know God and worship Him freely must be the
bedrock of good government. No other form of government has allowed common men individual liberty to pursue and complete the work God gave them to do.

Thanksgiving points to the fact that there is another King, one called Jesus! “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
II Cor 3:17

This is why the devil hates Thanksgiving! This is why he is busying himself revising American history in school textbooks. He is terrified that we might remember the manifold works of Christ in the establishment of America. The devil has pulled out all the stops to steal Thanksgiving from the American memory in the same way he killed those who translated the Bible into English. He must remove those witnesses and the evidences of God’s hand at work in our history lest we remember who we and why we were brought to this continent.

The devil knows very well what will happen to him when we remember who we are and why we are here… He may bruise our heal but we will crush his head. Thanksgiving, that great day of remembrance, points to God and His manifold workings on man’s behalf. It reminds us that we are beholden to Him and to no other. It reminds us that He is the sovereign of the cosmos and that apart from Him we can do nothing.

CHICAGO President-elect Barack Obama, saying “help is on the way,” appointed former Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker on Wednesday to head a new advisory board on how to confront the nation’s financial crisis.

Austan Goolsbee, a University of Chicago economist and senior economic adviser to Obama’s campaign, will be staff director for the new Economic Recovery Advisory Board, Obama told reporters.

“At this defining moment in our nation’s history, the old ways of thinking and the old ways of acting just won’t do,” Obama said.

Volcker, 81, is a legendary central banker who raised interest rates and restricted the money supply to tame raging inflation in the 1980s. It was a painful prescription that helped send the economy into one of the nation’s worst recessions.

“He pulls no punches,” Obama said of Volcker. “He seems to be fairly opinionated.”

Obama’s latest announcement come in a week in which he tapped New York Federal Reserve President Timothy Geithner, as his Treasury Secretary, former Treasury secretary Lawrence Summers as head of the National Economic Council and Congressional Budget Office Director Peter Orszag as head of the White House Office of Management and Budget.

His economic team largely complete, Obama is expected next week to introduce national security officials.

This will be the sixth president that Volcker has served. President Jimmy Carter appointed him as Fed chair in 1979, and President Ronald Reagan re-appointed him four years later. Volcker was reviled in his time for keeping interest rates high, but also credited with wringing inflation out of the economy and setting it on a path of sustained growth.

Stan Collender, managing director for Qorvis Communications, said the markets “love” Volcker and getting him “inside the tent” will build confidence on Wall Street. Collender said the advisory board should provide Obama with a wide variety of views.

“It allows for discussions to take place across departments and agencies and allows for more ‘outside-the-box’ thinking,” Collender said. “It also rents some of Volcker’s credibility until the president-elect can further establish some of his own.”

THE PRESIDENT: Mr. Secretary General, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen: Laura and I are pleased to be back here at the United Nations, and I am grateful for the opportunity to once again address the General Assembly.

I want to thank King Abdallah of Saudi Arabia for his leadership and for convincing us all to come together to speak about faith. I appreciate the participants who recognize the transformative and uplifting power of faith.

One of my core beliefs is that there is an Almighty God — and that every man, woman, and child on the face of this Earth bears His image. Many years ago, faith changed my life. Faith has sustained me through the challenges and the joys of my Presidency. And faith will guide me for the rest of my days.

I know many of the leaders gathered in this assembly have been influenced by faith, as well. We may profess different creeds and worship in different places, but our faith leads us to common values. We believe God calls us to love our neighbors, and to treat one another with compassion and respect. We believe God calls us to honor the dignity of all life, and to speak against cruelty and injustice. We believe God calls us to live in peace — and to oppose all those who use His name to justify violence and murder.

Freedom is God’s gift to every man, woman, and child — and that freedom includes the right of all people to worship as they see fit. Sixty years ago, members of the United Nations General Assembly acknowledged this truth when we adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Declaration proclaims that everyone has the right to choose or change religions, and the right to worship in private or in public.

The United States strongly supported the adoption of the Universal Declaration — in fact, the American delegation was led by a former First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. When we voted for the Universal Declaration, the American people reaffirmed a conviction that dates back to our earliest days. Our nation was founded by people seeking haven from religious persecution. The First Amendment of our Constitution guarantees the “free exercise” of religion for all. And through the generations, our nation has helped defend the religious liberty of others — from liberating the concentration camps of Europe, to protecting Muslims*** in places like Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 11 — Saudi Arabia, the oil-rich Islamic kingdom that forbids the public practice of other religious faiths, will preside Wednesday over a two-day U.N. conference on religious tolerance that will draw more than a dozen world leaders, including President Bush, Israeli President Shimon Peres and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The event is part of a personal initiative by Saudi King Abdullah to promote an interfaith dialogue among the world’s major religions. The Saudi leader agreed for the first time to dine in the same room with the Israeli president at a private, pre-conference banquet Tuesday hosted by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. But Ban hinted that the two leaders — whose governments do not have diplomatic relations — were not seated at the same table.

The Saudi initiative emerged in the summer during a meeting of religious leaders in Mecca. The Saudi leader subsequently drew a range of religious groups — including Jews, Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Taoists and others — together in Madrid in July, where they signed a declaration calling for greater cooperation among religions.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice planned to attend the conference to hear the Saudi King’s opening address. Bush is scheduled to deliver an address Thursday. The White House said last month that it welcomed the Saudi initiative and supports “the right to practice one’s religion” and other principles of religious freedom enshrined in the U.N. charter.

But Saudi Arabia’s sponsorship of the event drew criticism from human rights advocates, who said that a country that oppresses its religious minorities lacks the moral authority to lead such a gathering.

“Saudi Arabia is not qualified to be a leader in this dialogue at the United Nations,” said Ali Al-Ahmed, a Saudi national who serves as director of the Washington-based Institute for Gulf Affairs. “It is the world headquarters of religious oppression and xenophobia.”

Most leaders from Europe — with the exception of Britain and Finland — Latin America, Africa and Asia stayed away, sending
lower-ranking representatives.

General Assembly President Miguel d’Escoto, a Roman Catholic priest from Nicaragua who is co-chairman of the conference, sought to play down the event’s religious significance. “We’re not here to talk about religion. . . . We’re here to talk about tapping our innermost values and putting them at the service” of the world’s neediest people.

“Humanity is in moral bankruptcy, and we are in need of being bailed out,” d’Escoto said. Asked whether Saudi Arabia had the moral standing to preside over the event, d’Escoto said: “I never conceived the United Nations as an organization of saints. We are in the world a community of sinners . . . and we should accept warmly any brother who wants to join forces to resolve” the most pressing problems.

UNITED NATIONS: Saudi Arabia, which deploys a special police force to ensure that a narrow sect of Islam predominates in the kingdom, is sponsoring a discussion at the United Nations on religious tolerance starting Wednesday.

More than a dozen world leaders are scheduled to attend the meeting, including President George W. Bush; the British prime minister, Gordon Brown; the Israeli president, Shimon Peres; and the heads of seven Arab states. King Abdullah, the Saudi monarch, and Peres were both expected as guests of Ban Ki-moon, the secretary general, at a dinner Tuesday night, a rare chance for an encounter.

The United Nations avoids religious discussions, so the two-day session of the General Assembly is officially being labeled as a meeting about the “culture of peace.” Most of those attending are political rather than religious figures.

Saudi Arabia bars its citizens and its sprawling expatriate community, including tens of thousands of Christians, from any public worship outside Islam. The more than two million Saudi Shiites face widespread discrimination in worship, education and employment.

A special police force, the Society for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, ensures that Muslims go to prayer five times a day and that the Wahhabi sect of Sunni Islam prevails.

The global effort to build a “culture of peace” among Christians and Muslims and other faiths is gaining some momentum this month, both symbolically and substantively.

After a groundbreaking meeting between Roman Catholic and Muslim religious leaders last week, world political leaders this week are meeting to heighten the visibility and broaden the commitment to interfaith dialogue. On Nov. 12 and 13 at the United Nations, President Bush gathers with a dozen heads of state and other leaders to lend political backing to interfaith initiatives. The prime minister of Britain, leaders of several Muslim nations, and the presidents of Israel, Lebanon, and Palestine are among those participating.

Human Rights Watch called Tuesday for world leaders to press Saudi Arabia to end religious discrimination at home.

The meeting follows a separate interfaith initiative – the first Catholic-Muslim forum at the Vatican – hosted by Pope Benedict XVI. The talks on Nov. 4-6 led to a 15-point declaration that leaders of both faiths say exceeded their expectations (see www.acommonword.com ).

“We’ve turned an important page in the whole history of Christian-Muslim relations,” says Fr. James Massa, head of interreligious affairs for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. “What this conference has done is make the connection so clearly between core commitments of faith and respect for religious freedom and other human rights, and this is a remarkable achievement.”

They agreed to hold a second forum in a Muslim-majority country and to explore “establishing a permanent Catholic-Muslim committee to coordinate responses to conflicts and other emergency situations.”

Such a crisis-management effort could help deal with events like the Danish cartoon crisis or the recent attacks against Christian communities in Iraq, says Ibrahim Kalin, spokesman for the Muslim delegation and director of SETA Foundation in Ankara, Turkey.

The Rome forum constitutes the third phase of meetings growing out of “A Common Word,” the invitation to dialogue sent to all Christian churches in October 2007 by top clergy from across the Muslim world. The Muslims urged that dialogues be based on the shared principles of “love of God and love of one’s neighbor.”

Protestants met with Muslim leaders at Yale University in July. Anglicans hosted sessions at Cambridge University in Britain in October during which the participants read sacred texts together. Next spring, religious and political leaders will meet in Washington to consider political and social actions that might follow from the three dialogues.
