Fred Thompson blew into South Carolina and Greenville today on a wave of public adulation and media hype.
Thompson, the former senator and TV star, seems to motivate some Republican supporters in the same way Barack Obama has fired up Democratic activists.
A lot of it has to do with star charisma.
Supporters have made Thompson out to be the salvation of the Republican Party and the conservative movement.
Dean Rice, who’s running Thompson’s S.C. campaign, said he’ll certainly live up to his conservative credentials.
He’s the only REAL conservative among the GOP presidential hopefuls – at least that’s what his supporters say, according to an AP story.”
“Those expectations certainly are going to be met as far as being a rock-solid conservative,” Rice was quoted by the AP.
But is Thompson really conservative?
His voting record is a little more ambiguous that [sic] conservatives may want to admit.
On abortion, for instance, Thompson has consistently supported restrictions.
But Thompson has been dogged by questions about abortion. Critics point out that in 1994, when he first ran for the Senate, Thompson cheked a box on a quetsionnaire saying he believed abortion should be legal in the first three months of pregnancy.
The very conservative S.C. group Columbia Christians for Life has been running an aggressive anti-Thompson e-mail campaign, stating unequivocally that Thompson is “pro-abortion.”
That group is criticizing Thompson for saying that the states should be able to have some “leeway” (Thompson’s word) on abortion and that, in some cases, he personally wouldn’t vote to criminalize abortion in his home state of Tennessee.”

On campaign finance reform, Thompson was a sponsor of the same bill supported by Sen. John McCain and strongly opposed by conservatives.
