Bush pushes GOP senators on immigration

[emphasis added]

President Bush speaks at the dedication of the Victims of Communism Memorial in Washington, D.C., today ahead of meeting with Senate Republicans on the stalled immigration bill. Behind Bush is a statue of the goddess of democracy.

From staff and wire reports

WASHINGTON President Bush, following a rare Capitol Hill meeting on Tuesday to lobby Senate Republicans for support of an immigration bill, acknowledged that it will take a “lot of hard work” to get the controversial measure through Congress.

He said the closed-door meeting underscored the sharp divisions within his party over the issue.

“Some in there believe that we need to move a comprehensive bill, some don’t. I understand that,” Bush told reporters in brief remark at the U.S. Capitol after the meeting. “Without the bill it’s going to be harder to enforce the border. The status quo is unacceptable.”

He said it was “going to take a lot of hard work, a lot of effort” to get it passed, but that “now’s the time to get it done.”

The complicated measure, largely supported by Democrats, would legalize up to 12 million unlawful immigrants and tighten border security.

Before lunch with the Senate GOP membership, Bush met with top Senate Republican leaders. He was joined by Vice President Cheney, presidential adviser Karl Rove and White House chief of staff Josh Bolten.

It’s unclear, though, how much influence Bush has among Republicans on immigration, given that it has sparked a backlash among some of the party’s core supporters, who see it as amnesty for people who sneaked into the country.

But the White House is hopeful that if opponents get a chance to voice their objections for the record, and introduce amendments, they will eventually allow the bill to pass.

We seem to be getting some signals out of the majority leader that he’ll go ahead and make that debate possible, and therefore we feel pretty confident we’re going to get passage,” said White House spokesman Tony Snow said.

White House still hopeful on immigration bill

WASHINGTON (AP) President Bush is not giving up on his plan to legalize millions of unlawful immigrants and will seek to convince skeptical GOP senators that it secures the nation’s borders, administration officials said Sunday.

But the Senate’s No. 2 Democratic leader said he was uncertain about the prospects for a deal. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois cited opposition from a group of Senate conservatives who contend the legislation guarantees amnesty to illegal immigrants.

“We need a breakthrough on the Republican side,” Durbin said.

Tony Snow, White House spokesman, and Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez both predicted an immigration bill would pass once Bush meets with lawmakers this week and Congress reconsidered the measure.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C Today, Senator Edward M. Kennedy was joined by Senators Jon Kyl, Dianne Feinstein, Arlen Specter, and Lindsey Graham to discuss the immigration reform bill.

Below are Senator Kennedy’s remarks.

(As delivered)

“This morning I’m reminded of the 1967 Boston Red Sox team, the impossible dream team, that was behind for a good part of the season, but came roaring back and grabbed victory out of the jaws of defeat.

And that is what we intend to do with the immigration bill.

We are not giving up. We are not giving in. I’m encouraged by what the leaders said last evening: that they have every intention of continuing the immigration bill on the front order of business for the agenda of the United States Senate.

Graham still hopeful despite stinging defeat
Senator from S.C. believes a reform measure will pass in the near future

WASHINGTON Sen. Lindsey Graham insisted Friday that Congress will pass comprehensive immigration reforms even as other senators ribbed him for having dubbed “the grand bargain” that crashed and burned.

A day after suffering a major legislative defeat, Graham minimized as “a bump in the road” the Senate’s failure Thursday to act on an immigration bill he helped craft.

“We’re inside the 10-yard line, and we’ve got four downs,” Graham said at a Capitol briefing. “I like our chances.”

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, the Massachusetts Democrat who managed the immigration measure during its two weeks on the Senate floor, used a different sports analogy in making a more cautious forecast.

“We are in the third or fourth inning on this,” he said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., pulled the immigration bill Thursday evening after two attempts to end debate were defeated, the second bid by 15 votes.

At a post-mortem Friday filled with gallows humor, Graham joined other primary sponsors of the immigration measure: Democratic Sens. Kennedy and Dianne Feinstein of California, and Republican Sens. John Kyl of Arizona and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania.

[CCL Note: Dianne Feinstein is a member of the NWO's Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), which is promoting the North American Union to merge Canada, the U.S., and Mexico (spp.gov), and is/has been a member of Rockefeller's/Brzezinski's Trilateral Commission. Arlen Specter is a 33rd Degree Mason.]

The senators said their party leaders had instructed them to come up with a list of amendments that would help the bill’s prospects for passage, along with a schedule for the Senate to consider them.

“Within a matter of weeks, this issue can and will be resolved,” Graham said.

Graham threatened to obstruct other legislation if the Senate doesn’t take up the immigration bill again.

“The only thing I can tell you about being a senator from South Carolina we don’t go away,” he said. “We’re going to keep pushing this. So if you name a post office in the future if a reasonable time passed and nothing happens (on immigration) if you name a post office, we’re going to be voting on immigration.”

Aides noted that the immigration bill could be attached to any other measure moving through the Senate, even the routine resolutions used to name post offices.

Graham’s Senate colleagues made jest of his having called the complex immigration package “the grand bargain” among powerful, competing interests.

“I sort of twinge at this idea of a grand bargain,” Kennedy said.

“That was Lindsey’s phrase,” Kyl quickly injected. “We don’t associate ourselves with it.”

As Graham laughed, Kyl added: “He wanted to call it ‘the Graham bargain.’ Someone misunderstood the words.”

Kennedy piled on: “Until it wasn’t going so grandly.”

When the laughter subsided, Graham set minimal conditions for his endorsement of a revamped immigration bill:

Hillary (Jezebel) Clinton: "It is God’s law to kill babies."

Article in Life Advocate, March 1993, “Washington Week” p. 12

“A word for (from) the Clintons”, by Lurleen Stackhouse

[Excerpts, emphasis added]

‘On January 21 my name appeared on the back page of the Washington Post as “an anti-abortion demonstrator” who confronted President and Mrs. Clinton at the AMEC church on Inauguration Day. The full story needs to be told.’

‘What should have been written was how stridently pro-death the Clintons really are. I had the opportunity to confront Hillary face to face and she countered by scoffing, “It is God’s law to kill babies.” This is the story that should have been told. Hillary Clinton believes in child abuse although she claims to be a champion of children’s rights. Once again the media missed the real story.’

[continued]

‘When the service concluded we were asked to stay seated until the President and Mrs. Clinton departed for the White House. However, as they walked down the aisle I stood and reached out for Mr. Clinton. He took my hand and I said, “Mr. Clinton, America must stop killing babies.” He looked at me with a blank stare on his face. I repeated this statement to him.’

‘Hillary then came to give me a hug and I said, “Hillary, it’s against God’s law to kill babies.” She stepped back, shaking and trembling, and then grabbed my arm. Her countenance transformed from a pleasant demeanor to the appearance of being possessed. Her eyes were enraged as she replied, “It is God’s law to kill babies.”

‘I drew back in shock at this blatant and revealing statement.’ …

[continued]

‘But the killing will continue so long as there is no understanding among church people about holiness. It will continue so long as Hillary Clinton and company have their feminist agenda enforced. It will continue as long as Christians continue to be apathetic and non-resistant. It will continue until God releases His hand of judgment upon our nation. But in the end it must stop. Until it does the voice of unborn babies will cry out for justice.

Should Fred Thompson enter the 2008 presidential race, he would become the fifth member of the globalist, NWO’s Council on Foreign Relations to do so, joining fellow CFR-members, US Senator John McCain, (former VA) Gov. Jim Gilmore, (NM) Gov. Bill Richardson, and US Senator Chris Dodd. Furthermore, former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich, also a member of the CFR, is also considering entering the presidential race later this Fall (perhaps if enough conservatives don’t take the bait and swallow the lie that globalist, First Amendment free-speech enemy Fred Thompson is a “conservative”).

Fred Thompson Vs. Ron Paul
Friday, June 01, 2007 – FreeMarketNews.com

Is it true that Fred Dalton Thompson, former republican senator from Tennessee and current actor is seen by GOP leaders as a “Ron Paul” vote killer? If so, the rhetoric may not match the facts, political observers say.

Thompson has indicated he will likely join the race for the GOP nomination for president in June. And in doing so, he will bring a perspective that he and his followers describe as “small government conservative and federalist” – much like Ron Paul’s.

Ron Paul (R-Tex), congressman and republican candidate for president has been seen by Internet observers as doing well both in debates and in terms of public sentiment. His message is one of minimalist government, low taxes and a non-aggressive military policy.

But Thompson’s record gives rise to questions about his small government and “federalist” credentials. Leaving aside the argument as to whether “federalist” is a “synonym” for small government, Thompson’s credentials as such still seem questionable, according to some observers of both campaigns. Because Thompson has spent much of his life as a public figure, his voting record is easily available at Wikepedia.com and from other ‘Net sources.

While in congress, Thompson, reportedly a good friend of Senator John McCain, (R-AZ) supported two obviously anti-free market bills: the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform act and the Shays-Meehan bill restricting issue ads. He is also a member of Council on Foreign Relations, a main think-tank behind the idea of a North American Union that would eventually dissolve borders between Mexico, Canada and the United States to create one big super-nation. Thompson also seems to believe in a robust military presence worldwide and apparently advocates continued US military involvement in Iraq.

Ron Paul’s “small government” credentials extend beyond rhetoric, and even the many editorials and position papers he has authored. Ron Paul has consistently voted a “constitutionalist” line in congress, and thus his actions match his sentiments. He is neither a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, nor any other Washington think tank that advocates similar views.
